As a school board member, you are a representative of the community and a leader of the district. You are a steward of your district’s children and its tax dollars. You are an advocate of public education and an educated public.
School boards lead and govern the schools and educational programs of our local, public school districts. That leadership role is performed as part of a team that includes the superintendent (also called the district administrator). Student learning and student achievement constitute the centerpiece of the board’s mission.
The board oversees the education of students and is responsible for school district operations, but does not directly run the district’s day-to-day operations.
Board Meetings
Each board meeting follows a set agenda that is available before each meeting. The agenda may also be picked up as you enter the meeting room. It is also available online on the school website.
The Lake Country School District invites all residents of the area to attend board meetings. Decisions of the School Board affect the quality of our children's education, our tax rates, as well as the quality of community life.
Meeting Dates
The Lake Country School Board generally meets on the third Monday of each month at 5:45 p.m. Committee meetings are held as scheduled and posted on the District’s website. All meetings are held in the library, on the first floor, of Lake Country School, located at 1800 Vettelson Road, Hartland, WI 53029.
Addressing the Board
The board recognizes the value to school governance of public comment on educational issues and the importance of involving members of the public in board meetings. The board provides a period for public comment at regular board meetings for non-agenda items.
If you wish to address the board at a Regular Board of Education meeting, you must fill in a "Request to Speak at a Board of Education Meeting" form located on the sign-in table. The form should be handed to the Secretary to the Board before the start of the meeting. If the topic is related to an agenda item, you will be called upon during the discussion period of that agenda item. If the topic is not related to an agenda item, you will be called upon during Citizen Comments.
- Rules of Decorum must be followed.
- Speakers are limited to three minutes of speaking for both Citizen Comments and Agenda Comments.
- Citizen Comments are open to a maximum of five speakers with no more than two people speaking on any one side of an issue. The board may not engage in an active discussion or take action, they may only ask clarifying questions.
- The President or other presiding officer has the power to limit the number of speakers during Agenda Comments and to ensure order.
- During a Special Board of Education meeting, there are no Citizen Comments. Comments will be limited to agenda items only.
Concerns
Parents or guardians who have a specific concern about their child's education or the school are urged to bring the problem to the attention of the student's teacher, school counselor, or person closest to the situation. If a satisfactory resolution cannot be found, the matter should be referred to the District Administrator. If you are not satisfied with the resolution or outcome of concern, you have the right to bring it to the Board.
